2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of HochLeger:

  • Location & Views: The chalets are praised for their "breathtaking views" of the Tyrolean Alps and the valley, offering an "absolute Ruhe" (absolute quiet) that allows guests to forget daily stress and recharge. The unique, secluded mountain setting is a major draw.
  • Design & Ambiance: The architecture, predominantly crafted from local and matured pine, larch, and fir wood, creates a "cozy and exclusive living" experience that harmonizes with nature. The blend of traditional alpine elements with luxurious amenities is highly appreciated.
  • Wellness Facilities: The on-site spa, including a sky-high infinity pool with a view, sauna, hot tub, and sun terrace, is a significant highlight, offering pure relaxation amidst nature. Massage and beauty treatments are also available.
  • Service & Hospitality: The staff consistently receives glowing reviews for being "very helpful and very kind," "super friendly," and attentive to every wish. Many guests emphasize that their wishes were fulfilled with care.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations at HochLeger consist of spacious chalets (between 70 and 125 m²) and unique tree houses, designed for 2 to 10 people. Guests describe the chalets as "amazing," "comfortable," and "very cozy." Each chalet is exquisitely furnished with high-quality natural materials like solid wood, loden, and linen.

Key features include:

  • Private Terraces and Balconies: Offering stunning mountain and valley views.
  • Fully Equipped Kitchens: Featuring handcrafted solid wood cabinets, stone countertops, and stocked with regional, seasonal ingredients from local farmers and artisans, including rustic breads, local milk and butter, forest jams, and wild honey.
  • Comfortable Living Areas: With sitting corners and open dolomite fireplaces for a warm ambiance.
  • Luxurious Bathrooms: Equipped with showers, bathtubs (some freestanding or al fresco with mountain views), natural stone sinks, and organic care products.
  • Bedding: Handmade pine beds with first-class ZillerSeasons natural rubber mattresses ensure restful sleep. Premium bedding and down comforters are also noted.
  • Modern Amenities: Flatscreen TVs with Sky, Dolby Surround sound systems with docking stations, and complimentary Wi-Fi are standard.

The chalets come in different themes: Hunter's, Sports, and Romantic, each with distinct color schemes and decor, such as trophy antlers in the Hunter's Chalet.

4. Dining Experience

A significant aspect of the HochLeger experience is the culinary offering, which emphasizes local and high-quality products.

  • Breakfast: A continental or vegetarian breakfast is served daily, including juice, fresh pastries, cheese, and fruits. This "lavish alpine breakfast" is typically enjoyed at the MartinerHof, a more than 500-year-old farmhouse, or can be delivered to the chalet. Guests consistently rate the breakfast as "super" and "great."
  • In-Chalet Dining: Chalets come with stocked sideboards featuring regional products. A daily delivery service provides breakfast rolls, Italian espresso, fresh strudel, and coffee.
  • Dinner Options: For dinner, guests can utilize DieMarie's Catering service for a relaxed evening in their chalet or dine at one of the ZillerSeasons restaurants in Zell am Ziller, with special prices offered for HochLeger guests. The option to book an on-site chef is also available. There is also a farm shop providing fresh farm eggs, Zillertal milk, and organic bread.

5. Service & Staff

  • Transport: While offering seclusion, guests should note that check-in takes place at the sister hotel, DasPosthotel, in Zell am Ziller, approximately 7.7 km (13 minutes) away. Winter equipment, including snow chains, is mandatory for cars on the mountain road to HochLeger from November 1st to April 15th, except for 4x4 vehicles. Free shuttle service from Zell/Ziller train station is available. Innsbruck Airport is 40 miles away, and Congress Zillertal is 9.9 miles from the property.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific price ranges vary depending on the chalet type, season, and duration of stay, HochLeger is considered a luxury property. Its "Value for money" scores typically range around 8.1-8.2, suggesting that while it is an investment, many guests feel the experience justifies the cost. The inclusion of breakfast and the extensive amenities contribute to the perceived value.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points have been mentioned:

  • Accessibility in Winter: The drive to the chalets, especially in winter, can be a bit challenging due to the mountain road and the requirement for winter tires or snow chains.
  • Distance to Skiing Area: One guest mentioned that driving to the Kaltenbach skiing area is "a bit of a drive hill down and up."
  • Limited On-site Dining Options: While catering and sister restaurants are available, some guests noted that the direct on-site food offerings might be limited, leading to reliance on external options or self-catering.

In summary, HochLeger Luxus Chalet Refugium am Berg delivers a truly exceptional luxury alpine experience, marked by stunning natural beauty, thoughtfully designed accommodations, outstanding service, and a focus on wellness and local gastronomy.

I stayed in the Sport chalet for 3 nights in August 2025. The cabin consists of 4 rooms, 2 lounges, a kitchen, and 4 bathrooms spread over two floors, with beautiful wooden decor. It also has a private jacuzzi. The place is a complex of chalets with a breakfast restaurant, an outdoor bathtub, a large jacuzzi, and a sauna. The location is high in the mountains, but the view is stunning. The road t...

The view is amazing. Great design. Private parking. Lovely design and beautiful furniture. Simply luxurious and cozy in a rare combination. Loved the area around it. Wifi - washing machines - private parking. Its a pit of a distances from the valley as it located middle in the mountain. You have to go down to find restaurants and such. The road up to the chalet is about 1.5 km of tricky road. Over...
