Expert Review: Fonteverde Lifestyle & Thermal Retreat
Fonteverde Lifestyle & Thermal Retreat, nestled in the picturesque Val d'Orcia in San Casciano dei Bagni, Italy, is a Michelin Key Selected property renowned for its luxurious thermal spa experience and stunning Tuscan setting. This exclusive resort, originally a 17th-century Medici villa, offers guests a transformative retreat focused on well-being and relaxation.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Fonteverde is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "an absolute dream" and "everything amazing." It consistently receives high scores, with an average rating of 8.9 out of 10 from numerous reviews, including excellent ratings for cleanliness (9.3), location (9.2), comfort (9.3), and staff (9.2). The sentiment leans strongly towards a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating experience, particularly due to its exceptional thermal facilities and the serene Tuscan countryside.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise Fonteverde for several standout features:
- Thermal Spa Facilities: The thermal spa is the undisputed star, featuring spectacular panoramic pools filled with natural spring waters rich in fluorine, magnesium, calcium, and sulfur, maintained at a natural temperature of 42°C. There are a total of three outdoor and three indoor thermal pools, along with a Bioaquam circuit, a salt cave, a Turkish bath, a sauna, and Kneipp circuit. The spa offers over 100 treatments, including Ayurvedic treatments, hot stone massages, aromatherapy, and cryotherapy. The pools are varied, open all day, very clean, and well-serviced by knowledgeable staff.
- Location & Views: The resort boasts an idyllic and secluded location amidst olive groves, vineyards, and rolling hills of the Tuscan Val d'Orcia, offering breathtaking panoramic views that guests describe as "stunning" and "uninterrupted."
- Design & Ambiance: The property, a beautifully restored Renaissance palace, exudes a classically elegant and refined style. The curated furnishings and architectural details are inspired by Tuscan palaces and Florentine and Sienese churches. The entire place is noted for its "restorative energy."
- Amenities: Beyond the extensive spa, the hotel offers multiple swimming pools (including a freshwater outdoor pool, and separate children's and even dog-friendly thermal pools), a fully equipped gym, a poolside bar, a garden, and free Wi-Fi and parking. The Equilibrium wellness philosophy, focusing on diet, body, and soul, is also a key offering.
3. Room Quality
The 78 rooms and suites at Fonteverde are described as air-conditioned, recently renovated, and designed with refined style and comfort in mind. They provide an elegant retreat with carefully curated details. Rooms feature comfortable beds, private bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and thick bathrobes. Some rooms offer private balconies with valley or pool views. While generally praised for being beautiful and clean, one review mentioned some rooms might have "plush (if slightly dated) carpeting" and that some garden view balconies were not usable due to insects and small reptiles.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience generally receives mixed but often positive feedback. The hotel features two on-site restaurants, including Ferdinando I, which serves traditional Tuscan cuisine and Italian wines on a panoramic 17th-century porch.
- Breakfast: The complimentary breakfast buffet is frequently praised as "rich and delicious," offering a continental selection, eggs made to order, and an array of house-made cakes, along with the unique option of drinking thermal waters.
- Lunch & Dinner: Lunch, particularly the al fresco setting, is consistently praised. However, dinner at the main restaurant sometimes receives criticism regarding value for money. Some guests felt the dishes were "overpriced" and "not great at all" for Italian standards, with one reviewer noting that the food "lacked the quality of a fine dining experience." Despite this, other guests have described meals at the restaurant as "excellent."
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Fonteverde are consistently highlighted as exceptional. Guests frequently commend them as "extremely friendly," "very polite and helpful," "welcoming," and "professional." Staff are noted for being knowledgeable, especially regarding the spa waters, and for providing excellent information and assistance, including organizing wine tasting tours and transfers. The dedication to guest comfort and a willingness to go above and beyond are recurring themes in feedback.
6. Location & Accessibility
Fonteverde Lifestyle & Thermal Retreat is situated in the heart of the Val d'Orcia, a stunning region of Tuscany. The location offers immense seclusion and privacy, surrounded by rolling hills, olive trees, and vineyards. While providing a peaceful escape, it is somewhat remote. The closest airport, Florence, is nearly 100 miles north, and most popular tourist attractions are 30-60+ minutes away by car. However, the hotel can arrange airport transfers and staff are knowledgeable about nearby medieval villages and wineries that tourists might miss. San Casciano dei Bagni, a charming thermal village, is a three-minute drive away, and the property offers transport to the village for dinner as a bonus.
7. Value & Pricing
Fonteverde is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this. While specific prices can vary, a 1-night stay for two adults can start from approximately $338.36, with prices potentially reaching around $495 depending on the day of the week, with Fridays often being the most expensive. Compared to the average price of $329 for a hotel room in San Casciano dei Bagni, Fonteverde is positioned at the higher end. However, many guests consider the experience, particularly the extensive thermal spa facilities, stunning location, and high level of service, to be well worth the cost, offering exceptional value for a luxurious retreat. Promotions for longer stays (three nights or more with breakfast and dinner) can also offer good value.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring criticisms have been noted:
- Dining Quality/Price: The most consistent complaint revolves around the dining experience for dinner, with several guests feeling that the restaurant food was "overpriced" and lacked the quality expected of a fine dining establishment, especially compared to Italian standards. Some guests opted for dinner in the nearby village for a better experience.
- Minor Room Issues: Isolated comments mentioned some rooms appearing "weared" or "tiny and not comfortable," and one guest reported that a "garden view" balcony had no actual garden view and was unusable due to insects and small reptiles.
- Pool Temperature/Maintenance: A past guest noted that the infinity pool seemed to have cooled down compared to previous visits, and some spa jets were not working properly.
- Limited English TV Channels: For a five-star hotel, the choice of English-speaking TV channels was described as very poor, limited mainly to international news.

Wrapping up our 2 week European honeymoon with a 3 night stay at Fonteverde was the best choice we could have made. Lounging by the pool in the sun, reading a good book, and soaking up the healing powers of the thermal water was just want we needed. We also booked a facial that was relaxing and made my skin glow. I loved being able to come to breakfast in my robe and slippers, all set to start a r...

I’m not really one to leave bad reviews but I felt genuinely disappointed by this experience so feel compelled to share it. I drove an hour and a half for what I wanted to be a relaxing spa experience in an beautiful location. I had looked into a number of places in the area around Florence and this looked to be a good offering with high prices but not top top end. On arrival to the spa, the facil...

Overall a disappointing experience. I'll start with the good - The spa is excellent - heated pools. Towels and robes, good and courteous staff. Everything else - very disappointing. Very outdated hotel. From breakfast to rooms. There is a constant element of trying to milk you as much money as possible. For example, an Aperol Spritz at the hotel bar costs 20 euros. I haven't seen such a price in l...

Lovely, relaxing place. Everything went well overall. I didn’t stay at the hotel, so I didn’t see the rooms, but the common areas are clean and well kept, and the staff clearly do their best. The price feels fair and in line with the experience.

Spa is disappointing. No real cold pools/areas. View is good in only one place, it’s mostly indoors/blocked by a wall, a real waste of the Tuscan countryside. The cafe offering and service is not good. The price is VERY expensive, save your money and don’t go. Better to use your own hotel’s pool
