Expert Review: Esplanade Tergesteo - Luxury Retreat
Esplanade Tergesteo - Luxury Retreat in Montegrotto Terme, Italy, a Michelin Key Selected property, is widely regarded as a top-tier destination for relaxation and wellness, particularly praised for its extensive thermal spa facilities and attentive service.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Esplanade Tergesteo is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as excellent, wonderful, and a "class hotel in every sense." It consistently achieves high scores for cleanliness (9.7), comfort (9.7), facilities (9.5), and staff (9.4) on various booking platforms. The hotel's designation with a Michelin Key signifies a "very special stay with high comfort and great personality," acknowledging its excellence in architecture, design, service, character, and value.
2. Key Highlights
Guests particularly adore the hotel's world-class spa and wellness offerings. The three luxurious thermal pools, including connecting indoor and outdoor options, and the unique H2O3 Pool with ozone micro-bubbles, are frequently highlighted for their therapeutic benefits and relaxing ambiance. The "Emotion Zone" spa features a Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, ice waterfall, experiential showers, and a Kneipp path. The adults-only RoofTop54 spa further adds to the appeal with a saltwater pool and panoramic views. The superb breakfast quality and the overall modern, elegant design of the retreat are also consistent points of praise. Complimentary city bikes and e-bikes allow guests to explore the beautiful Euganean Hills.
3. Room Quality
Esplanade Tergesteo offers modern, air-conditioned rooms, each designed to be unique and stimulating. Rooms typically feature free WiFi, a private bathroom, a desk, and a flat-screen TV. Guests describe them as spacious, very welcoming, and exceptionally comfortable, with plush king beds and large, powerful showers. Options range from Deluxe Rooms with soft, neutral tones to Vital Rooms and Vital Spa Suites, some of which boast luxurious amenities like wood-burning fireplaces, private Finnish saunas, and mini-pools on the terrace. Allergy-free rooms are also available. While rooms are advertised as soundproof, some guests have noted occasional street noise when balcony doors are open.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience is a significant highlight, especially the breakfast, which is consistently described as outstanding, excellent, rich, and tasty, featuring a wide selection of delicious food made with high-quality ingredients. The hotel has two on-site restaurants, Pepita Restaurant and Bistrò54. Pepita offers regional and international cuisine, often with candlelight dinners and a piano bar. Bistrò54 provides a more casual setting for light lunches by the pool. The menu draws inspiration from classic regional and national dishes, with creative twists. The hotel also prides itself on an extensive wine list, guided by a Maitre Sommelier, and an exclusive OEnotheque with rare selections. The Gold Bar is available for innovative cocktails. However, some guests have found the food in the main restaurant, particularly special menus like Christmas dinner, to be "bizarre and very expensive," suggesting better value can be found at local restaurants outside the hotel.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Esplanade Tergesteo receives exceptional praise, with many guests remarking on the staff as "the best we ever came upon." The team is consistently described as courteous, very nice, welcoming, helpful, and attentive, with requests handled immediately. Specific individuals, such as Emanuele, have been noted for their welcoming demeanor. The hotel maintains a standard of "discreet and all-encompassing luxury" with a strong focus on guest satisfaction. However, some guests have reported issues with the English proficiency of certain staff members and noted that younger breakfast staff appeared less experienced.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel is situated in Montegrotto Terme, a tranquil area at the foot of the Euganean Hills Regional Park, offering picturesque views and opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and golf. It provides a comfortable and pampering retreat, yet is conveniently located for exploring nearby attractions and art cities. The Terme Euganee-Abano-Montegrotto Train Station is within walking distance, offering easy access to destinations like Padua and Venice (approximately 29 miles away). The hotel also provides a paid airport shuttle service to Venice Marco Polo Airport. While the hotel itself is magnificent, some visitors have expressed disappointment with the immediate surrounding area outside the hotel gates, describing parts of it as run down or neglected.
7. Value & Pricing
Esplanade Tergesteo is recognized by the Michelin Key for its "value for the price paid," reflecting the quality of its facilities, services, and overall luxury experience. While considered a luxury retreat, pricing can vary significantly. Average weeknight rates are around $513, with weekend nights potentially reaching $965. Prices for a 1-night stay can start from approximately $559.1. January is typically the cheapest month to stay, while February can be significantly more expensive. Some guests have found certain extra services, such as spa towels, drinking water in the spa, and specific restaurant meals, to be expensive or "exorbitant." One review suggested the price did not always align with a 5-star expectation, estimating a fair price much lower; however, the hotel management emphasizes that their pricing reflects the comprehensive luxury experience offered.
8. Common Complaints
Recurring criticisms include the perception that the immediate surrounding area of Montegrotto Terme outside the hotel can appear neglected or run down. Some guests have noted difficulties with staff English proficiency, and felt that certain services or amenities within the spa (like water and towels) should be complimentary given the price point. Issues with internet access and the online check-in process were also mentioned by a few guests. The cost and perceived quality of dinner in the main restaurant, particularly for special events, has also been a point of contention for some.

This is the place to stay if you are in the Montegrotto area. I've been here more than once and the experience is always perfect in every way. The staff is extremely attentive and accommodating. The grounds and facilities are always immaculate. The food is top notch and the huge and meandering hot-sping fed pools are like nothing else you will experience. Highly recommended!

Went for a massage, the reception staff were not accommodating or particularly nice and looked us up and down. The facilities were beautiful and the massage therapist was great but I won’t be going back.

Beautiful Hotel, but not ready for vegan guests, they have only salad as 'vegan' option, don't expect any vegan protein, so you may feel hungry all day as not eating a proper meal, overall experience good.

**Review for Spa Day** Booking experience - sent an email and no one replied. I called twice to speak with someone who speaks English, they said to email for someone to call me. No one called. Their spa menu is lacking information. The Day Spa price does not include the entrance fee so for €130 day package is already overpriced. This is the first time I am paying an additional entrance fee on top ...
