Expert Review: El Silencio Lodge & Spa
El Silencio Lodge & Spa, a distinguished Michelin Two-Key property nestled in the cloud forests of Bajos del Toro, Costa Rica, offers an exceptional eco-luxury retreat deeply integrated with nature. It is widely praised for its breathtaking natural setting, personalized service, and commitment to sustainability.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
El Silencio Lodge & Spa consistently garners an exceptional and overwhelmingly positive sentiment from guests, often described as a "magical escape into nature". It's celebrated as a wonderful and romantic property, ideal for those seeking a tranquil, healthy break from a fast-paced world. The general consensus highlights a peaceful, unique, and luxurious experience, making it a highly recommended destination, particularly for honeymooners, couples, and families with older children.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud El Silencio for several standout features:
- Location & Nature Immersion: The lodge's secluded setting within a misty cloud forest, surrounded by stunning mountain and river views, is a primary draw. The property boasts 500 private acres, featuring three exclusive waterfalls and over 2 km (3 miles) of well-maintained hiking trails. Its focus on wellness and communion with nature is evident throughout.
- Amenities: Each room offers a private outdoor heated whirlpool and a viewing deck, providing dramatic jungle vistas. The resort also features a tranquil spa, a yoga deck, and an organic mini-farm.
- Service: The staff is frequently described as attentive, extremely kind, thoughtful, and genuinely caring, enhancing the personalized experience.
- Activities: A wide range of on-site activities are available, including guided waterfall hikes, horseback riding, zip-lining (for older kids and adults), bird watching, rappelling, and cultural classes such as tortilla making and coffee tasting.
3. Room Quality
The accommodations at El Silencio, comprising 24 rooms, suites, and villas, are spacious, beautifully designed, and offer a cozy ambiance. They feature rich, chocolate-brown wood floors and furniture, softened by cream walls and accented with cool marble and bamboo. Rooms are equipped with comfortable king-size beds, handcrafted rocking chairs on private porches, and floor-to-ceiling windows that provide expansive views of the lush jungle. A gas fireplace adds to the cozy atmosphere. Guests appreciate the high-thread count sheets, luxury bath amenities, and thoughtful touches like daily treats and hot water bottles placed at turn-down. While all rooms share a similar floor plan, suites higher up the hill are noted for offering a more immersive cloud forest experience.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at El Silencio is highly regarded, with Las Ventanas Restaurant serving "next-level" organic cuisine. The restaurant emphasizes hyper-local, fresh, and sustainably sourced ingredients, many from the lodge's own organic farm. The menu offers a fusion of Costa Rican, Peruvian, and Mediterranean flavors, with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options available. Breakfast, often a buffet, is a highlight, featuring fresh tropical fruit, homemade bread, and grilled fish sourced directly from the lodge's trout pond. The Toro Bohemio Bar provides locally-inspired cocktails and house brews, while Sophia's Coffee & Pastries offers world-class Costa Rican coffee. Some guests have noted occasional inconsistencies in dinner quality, though many dishes, like the steak, receive high praise.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at El Silencio Lodge & Spa consistently receives glowing reviews for their exceptional hospitality, attentiveness, and genuine kindness. Guests report feeling well-cared for, with staff remembering preferences and going above and beyond to ensure a memorable stay. An "eco-concierge" service is available to help guests plan their jungle expeditions and recommend activities. While some older reviews mentioned that not all staff were completely fluent in English, and there were occasional delays with WhatsApp concierge responses, face-to-face interactions are consistently lauded as warm, helpful, and efficient.
6. Location & Accessibility
El Silencio is situated in Bajos del Toro, a serene and somewhat "off the beaten path" cloud-forested valley, ensuring a retreat from typical tourist crowds. It is approximately 64 kilometers (40 miles) and a 90-minute to two-hour drive from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). The drive to the lodge can be steep, winding, and feature potholes, making a 4x4 vehicle or arranged hotel transport highly recommended. The lodge's remote setting is part of its charm, offering direct access to its private nature reserve and waterfalls. Nearby attractions include Juan Castro Blanco and Poás Volcano National Parks, and the artisan town of Sarchí.
7. Value & Pricing
As a Michelin Two-Key property and a member of Relais & Châteaux, El Silencio Lodge & Spa is a luxury destination, and its pricing reflects this. Rooms typically start around $400-$650 per night, which includes daily breakfast and access to many on-site activities. While guests acknowledge the cost, many affirm that the unique experience, personalized service, and extensive included activities make it "worth every penny."
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted by guests:
- Dining Inconsistency: Although generally praised, some guests reported that the quality of dinner entrees could be inconsistent at times, despite excellent breakfasts and certain standout dishes.
- Pricing Transparency: A past concern involved unclear or un-itemized charges for additional activities or drinks, leading to unexpected costs upon checkout.
- Road Conditions: The journey to the lodge is frequently mentioned as challenging due to steep, winding roads and potholes, which can be difficult, especially at night.
- English Fluency: Some older reviews pointed out that not all staff members were fully fluent in English.
- No In-Room WiFi: While appreciated by some for promoting a digital detox, the lack of in-room Wi-Fi might be a minor inconvenience for others, though it is available in public areas.
- Bugs and Humidity: Being in a jungle environment, some encounters with bugs and spiders are to be expected, though typically not problematic. The humidity can also be a factor, as one guest noted their hair "didn't like the humidity."
- Jacuzzi Heat Time: The private outdoor jacuzzis can take up to two hours to heat up.

A beautiful resort where the digital world is forgotten. Surrounded by pure beauty. The villas are well appointed, very clean, and we loved the private hot tub after a day of nature-filled hiking to the beautiful waterfalls (you can swim at the main one!). We saw diverse wildlife around the grounds. We absolutely loved the guided tours (waterfalls, early birdwatching, night tour); the guides were ...

A magical place situated in the rainforest in Bajos Del Toro. The staff were all so friendly and helpful, from front of house, to the buggy drivers who help you get around, to the eco concierges running the activities. We stayed for two nights, in that time we did the waterfall trails, horse riding, and archery. All were wonderful!! The rooms are excellent, and the private hot tubs are a dream - n...

The food is amazing quality - some of the best I’ve ever had. And the activities they offer are also great. We had the guide Andres for two tours and cannot recommend him enough!!! The rooms are also very nice and the housekeepin...

Beautiful high end hotel in amazing setting. Nicely furnished cabins and lots of nice touches around the place - like cookies and hot chocolate, archery, tree planting and more. So why not 5* review? For me with hotels, especially in this price bracket, if you want 5* you need to be perfect. And it wasn’t. Theres nowhere to hang or dry wet clothes which given it never stopped raining and there was...

El Silencio was the perfect place to start our honeymoon. We were treated like VIPs and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Anyale, Fabian, and Estefany at Las Ventanas were so kind and professional. The food and service at the restaurant were incredible. We went on the Las Gemelas waterfalls tour with Ronal, who was an absolutely amazing guide. Seleny's massage at Esencia Spa was perfection.
