Expert Review: East Austin Hotel

The East Austin Hotel, a recipient of the prestigious Michelin Key, offers a vibrant and stylish boutique experience in the heart of Austin's dynamic East Side. Recognized for providing a "very special stay" with service exceeding that of similarly priced establishments, the hotel blends classic Americana with modernist and Scandinavian design, creating a unique and welcoming atmosphere for its guests.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for East Austin Hotel is overwhelmingly positive, with guest ratings typically falling in the "Very Good" to "Excellent" range (8.1-8.4 out of 10) across various booking platforms. Guests frequently praise its distinctive style, lively ambiance, and prime location, making it a popular choice for travelers seeking a unique Austin experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several aspects that make the East Austin Hotel stand out:

  • Location: Its central position in East Austin, just five blocks from downtown, makes it incredibly walkable to popular attractions like 6th Street, Rainey Street, the Austin Convention Center, and a plethora of local bars and restaurants.
  • Design: The hotel boasts a vibrant retro mid-century modern design with Scandinavian influences, characterized by blonde woods, pink hues, and eclectic vintage touches, creating a "boho-chic" aesthetic.
  • Amenities: The lively courtyard pool, often described as having "Palm Springs vibes," is a major draw, complemented by a rooftop terrace and multiple on-site dining and bar options. Free WiFi and pet-friendly policies are also appreciated.
  • Service: The staff consistently receives accolades for being friendly, helpful, and professional, enhancing the overall guest experience.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at East Austin Hotel are generally described as clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. Many feature a mid-century Scandinavian aesthetic with custom robes and towels, plush Casper mattresses, Egyptian cotton sheets, and down comforters, ensuring a restful stay. Guests often find the beds exceptionally comfortable.

While some rooms offer private attached bathrooms with rainfall showerheads, complimentary toiletries, and hairdryers, the hotel also provides "Cabins" with European-style shared private bathrooms. Even the shared facilities are noted for being impeccably clean and private, often including sandals and bath products. Some rooms also come with a balcony, seating area, safety deposit box, and fridge. Despite being located on a lively street, rooms are often reported to be quiet after 10:00 PM.

4. Dining Experience

The East Austin Hotel offers a diverse dining and beverage program with several distinct options. The on-site restaurant, Poeta, provides approachable Italian cuisine and is also recognized by the Michelin Guide. Previously, Second Bar + Kitchen offered a modern twist on classic American cuisine, serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner with a focus on fresh, local ingredients, including vegetarian, dairy-free, and vegan options.

For drinks and lighter fare, guests can enjoy The Upside, a rooftop bar with a Latin/Caribbean ambiance, or the Pool Bar, which serves American cuisine and tropical-inspired drinks alongside the vibrant pool area. Daily cooked-to-order breakfast is available for a fee.

5. Service & Staff

The service at East Austin Hotel is consistently highlighted as a strong point. Guests frequently commend the staff for being friendly, professional, and genuinely helpful, from the front desk to the pool bar. The hospitality contributes significantly to the hotel's welcoming atmosphere, and multilingual staff are available to assist guests.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location on East 6th Street is considered excellent for exploring Austin. It's situated in the bustling East Austin neighborhood, offering a mix of historic bungalows and modern establishments. Key attractions such as downtown Austin, 6th Street, Rainey Street, the Austin Convention Center (a 15-minute walk), and the Texas State Capitol are all within easy reach by foot or bicycle. Public transportation is also readily accessible, with Plaza Saltillo Station just a 6-minute walk away. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is approximately 5 miles from the property.

7. Value & Pricing

The East Austin Hotel is generally considered to offer good value for the cost, often being "better priced than nearby options" while still providing a high-quality experience. As of late January 2026, nightly rates for a standard stay typically range from approximately $118 to $149, excluding taxes and fees. Its Michelin Key selection further underscores its exceptional value, indicating that it provides significantly more than similarly priced accommodations.

8. Common Complaints

While generally well-received, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Shared Bathrooms: For guests staying in "Cabin" rooms, the shared bathroom concept, while clean and private, may not appeal to everyone.
  • Parking Costs: On-site parking can be expensive (around $34-$35 per night) and is often limited, which can be an inconvenience for guests with cars.
  • Noise Levels: While rooms are often quiet at night, some guests have noted that music from the pool area can be loud and extend late into the evening.
  • Maintenance Issues: There have been occasional mentions of mold or mildew smells, particularly around air conditioning units or in communal bathrooms, as well as a strong perfumed smell in some rooms.
  • Room Size & Views: Some rooms are described as small, and views may not always be picturesque, with some overlooking back roads rather than the pool or city.
  • Dining Service: Historically, some guests have noted that the customer service at the attached restaurant/bar could be improved, though this may refer to previous dining concepts.

Great little spot for a quick stay over. 24 hr reception, staff were super friendly. Room is spacious, but there was a clicking coming through the walls all night. I was so tired that I was able to sleep through it but otherwise, it definitely would have kept me up. There was extra shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom, but no body wash or hand soap. I brought my own, so it wasn’t worth complain...

This hotel is a well-kept secret, a true delight and well-priced. Great vibes. The staff was helpful and friendly and the room was decorated very much like in Dwell Magazine. Nice thick towels, modern bathroom and comfy bed. Spotless with great bathroom. Each Christmas when I visit my brother's family in Austin I try different hotels. This was the best in the past 7 years!I'm on a budget and was s...

I had such a great stay at East Austin Hotel. The “shared” bathrooms really surprised me — they didn’t feel shared at all since each pod has its own shower and toilet. Super clean, modern, and comfortable. The staff were all super nice and welcoming. I had dinner at the restaurant one night — the salmon with rice was so good. Paired with the Sauvignon. I sat at a table in the back (as per pic), p...

Disappointed with East Austin Hotel. Double-booked room at check-in, promised same rate for extension (it increased), full stay charged to personal card instead of company AMEX as agreed, incorrect Expedia claim when invoicing, housekeeping ignored DND, delivery not brought to room, and restaurant mostly closed despite vouchers. Staff polite but many promises not kept. Great location, but too many...

I stayed at East Austin Hotel and absolutely loved the vibe. The mid-century, Moroccan-inspired design feels fresh and cool, and the rooms are comfy without being over the top. Their Rooftop Bar and Pool Bar were perfect for relaxing — sipping cocktails under string lights with a chill crowd. The location is ideal — just five blocks from downtown, which made walking to music, bars, and food super...

This is not a hotel for business travelers. Its not even a hotel it's a step above a hostel. It's impossible to find you have to drive around back. There is NO free parking. You have to pay via phone app which is a pain to set up to gain access to the underground car park which costs $30/day. This is not disclosed on any web sites. The girl at the front desk had the personality of a ice pick. Com...
