Expert Review: Corinthia Palace Malta

Corinthia Palace Malta, an esteemed Michelin Key Selected property in Attard, consistently earns high praise for its timeless elegance, exceptional service, and serene ambiance. Guests frequently highlight its luxurious feel and the staff's genuine hospitality.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Corinthia Palace Malta is widely regarded as a superb 5-star hotel, consistently scoring highly with guests, achieving a 9.0/10 ("Superb") based on over a thousand reviews, and often rated as "Wonderful." The general sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a beautiful hotel with friendly staff, excellent food, and impeccable cleanliness. Many consider it the "epitome of a 5-star hotel," providing a relaxed yet opulent experience that feels like a home away from home.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the Corinthia Palace Malta for several standout features:

  • Service & Staff: The staff are a recurring highlight, consistently described as super friendly, helpful, exceptionally professional, and going above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay. Their warm, welcoming, and attentive nature contributes significantly to the overall positive experience.
  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel, built around an elegant 19th-century converted villa, impresses with its beautifully landscaped gardens, marble atrium, and opulent yet relaxed old-worldly charm. Recent renovations to some rooms blend classical architecture with contemporary interiors, incorporating elements reminiscent of Malta's natural beauty.
  • Amenities: The hotel boasts extensive facilities, including an outdoor swimming pool, a comprehensive wellness center (Athenaeum Spa, Vitality Suite with indoor pool, saunas, steam room, hot tub), a gym, and multiple dining venues. Complimentary access to the Athenaeum Spa and Reflex Gym is often included. A free shuttle service to Valletta and a concierge app further enhance convenience. The property is also pet-friendly, even offering a "Palace Pups Pool" for canine guests.

Room Quality

The guest rooms at Corinthia Palace Malta are generally described as spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed, each featuring a private balcony. Reviewers have praised their cleanliness and generous size. Rooms are noted for their opulent and luxurious feel, with huge and very comfortable beds, effective heating/cooling systems, and often fitted with carpets for added coziness. Standard amenities include a minibar, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, TV, safe, and a selection of toiletries. Bathrooms are typically spacious and often feature marble finishes with deep baths. Deluxe Suites, for example, are designed with warm tones, soft lighting, delicate gold accents, and classically inspired details, aiming to feel like a luxurious home. Some older reviews, however, suggest that some traditional rooms might benefit from a refresh and could be perceived as relatively small compared to other luxury accommodations, though still comfortable and quiet.

Dining Experience

The dining experience at Corinthia Palace Malta is a significant highlight for many. Breakfast is consistently rated as "top class" and "extra delicious," featuring an extensive, fresh, well-organized, and frequently replenished selection, including fresh juices and quality coffee. The hotel offers multiple dining options, including Rickshaw for Asian cuisine, an Italian restaurant at The Villa, and the casual Summer Kitchen by the pool. The Villa Corinthia is particularly noted for its refined cuisine featuring Maltese ingredients, with its chef having previously cooked for Queen Elizabeth. The afternoon tea is considered a "soothing affair" with delightful homemade jams, clotted cream, and lemon curd. While generally positive, some guests have found food at certain outlets, such as The Orange Grove, to be expensive with occasional long wait times, and one reviewer noted a particular dish (Eggs Benedict) was not up to par, though acknowledged this might have been an isolated incident. One guest expressed disappointment with the foyer café becoming plant-based and not serving cow's milk.

Service & Staff

The service and staff at Corinthia Palace Malta receive overwhelmingly positive feedback, often cited as a key reason for return visits. Guests describe them as "super friendly," "very helpful," "exceptionally professional," "sincerely friendly," and providing "outstanding" service. Many appreciate that the staff "went above and beyond" and are "warm, welcoming, and attentive" from the moment of arrival. Bellboys seamlessly handle luggage and escort guests to their rooms, providing helpful information about the hotel's facilities. The team is always on hand and eager to assist. Notably, the hotel is recognized for its attention to detail, including sensitivity training for LGBTQ+ guests, contributing to an unflustered and relaxed ambiance.

Location & Accessibility

Corinthia Palace Malta is situated in Attard, considered "the heart of the island of Malta," offering a quiet and peaceful setting. Its location is ideal for exploring the island, facing the Presidential Palace and directly adjacent to the beautiful San Anton Botanical Gardens. While not directly in a bustling city, its central position ensures that key Maltese attractions are easily accessible. The ancient walled city of Mdina is approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) away, and the lively resort of St Julians is about 7 km (4.3 miles) distant. The hotel offers a convenient daily free shuttle service to Valletta. Malta International Airport is around 3.3 miles away. The property is also wheelchair accessible, with a range of accessible facilities.

Value & Pricing

Guests generally perceive Corinthia Palace Malta to offer good value for money, with a rating of 8.6/10 in this category. Many reviewers feel that the excellent service and luxurious experience make it "worth every single penny." Those seeking a more budget-friendly option might consider a winter break, as prices can be significantly lower than during the peak summer season. While overall value is positive, some guests have noted that breakfast might be an additional charge, and dining at certain in-house restaurants can be expensive.

Common Complaints

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some minor recurring criticisms include:

  • Room Condition: A few older reviews suggest that some of the "traditional" or "classic" style rooms could benefit from a refresh and might be considered smaller compared to other luxury hotels.
  • Dining Cost/Service: Isolated incidents mention expensive food and slow service at some of the hotel's restaurants.
  • Limited Dining Options (Specific Needs): One guest expressed disappointment with the foyer café becoming entirely plant-based and no longer offering cow's milk.

A real gem of a hotel. Having stayed previously at various in Valetta, this is where I would return to and recommend. A verdant setting in a quiet, upmarket locality. The hotel is superbly maintained and almost has the air of a lovely country house. The absolute standouts are the exceptional staff; from restaurant to reception to Caprice.....even the cleaners and garden team were always friendly...

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They were always happy to assist you. The hotel itself was grand and beautiful, and the rooms were too. Breakfast was very diverse and delicious. The swimming pools were large and were child friendly from 9-12am. There was also a spa and salon. The outdoor was not open during the winter though. Overall I was very happy with my stay.

The common areas and spa at Corinthia Palace Malta are genuinely nice and well maintained, and the restaurant is good. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives mostly end. The rooms are very, very, very old. They feel dated, tired, and completely out of step with what you would expect from a hotel at this price point. For what you pay, the room quality is frankly disappointing — worn furnishings...

Everything at The Corinthia is lovely, from the location (no city is too far away) to the food (do try “Bahia” on the first floor if you get the chance)… but what really made my family’s stay memorable was the friendliness and disposition of the staff. I came to Malta as a solo traveller for 5 days and stayed in a Grand Deluxe Room. The room was spacious with plenty of seating and a beautiful balcony. A mini fridge and tea/coffee making facilities were available.
