The hotel maintains a high rating, reflecting its success in providing a luxurious and unique escape.
2. Key Highlights
Consolación's allure lies in several key highlights:
- Location & Tranquility: Its "stunning" and "undisturbed" setting in the mountainous Matarraña region provides immense peace and breathtaking views, allowing guests to truly disconnect.
- Unique Design & Architecture: The hotel is celebrated for its thoughtful and distinct design, particularly its modern "cubes" and the integration with a 16th-century hermitage.
- Exceptional Dining: Both dinner and breakfast receive high praise for their quality, local produce, and sophisticated approach.
- Attentive Service: The staff is consistently described as knowledgeable, helpful, warm, and welcoming.
3. Room Quality
Consolación offers twelve rooms, split between a converted hermitage building and ten modern wooden "Kubes" perched on a cliff edge. Each room is designed with large windows and designer details, aiming to create an experience akin to "being in a very sophisticated tent in the middle of nature."
- Cube Rooms: These modernist structures are a major draw, featuring sunken baths of luxurious black slate and often a suspended fireplace, providing "uninterrupted views of the natural surroundings." They are described as warm, comfortable, and a "spectacle." Some Kubes can be joined for families.
- Hermitage Rooms (Ermita Barroca & Nordica): The two rooms in the old hermitage building offer distinct styles. The Ermita Barroca room, at 46 sqm, features "explosive colors and fabrics" inspired by the 19th century, a lounge area with an open fireplace, and views of the courtyard. The Ermita Nordica room (53 sqm) showcases soft tones, original Danish furniture, Alvar Aalto lamps, a fireplace, and beautiful mountain views.
All rooms generally include comfortable king beds with 300-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets and 450grms/m cotton towels and bathrobes, along with amenities like air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and often a private terrace.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at Consolación is a significant highlight. The restaurant, housed in a former barn with stone and steel accents and glass walls, serves a mixture of modern and regional dishes with a strong emphasis on fresh, local, and often organic produce.
- Cuisine: Following a "slow food concept," the menu changes seasonally and incorporates ingredients from their own garden and local suppliers, including black truffles, organic vegetables from Rafales, "Lamb from Aragon," Teruel ham, and local cheeses.
- Breakfast: Guests consistently describe the breakfast as "excellent" and "fabulous," featuring high-quality local products.
- Accessibility: The restaurant is open year-round and welcomes non-hotel guests. Guests also have access to a shared kitchen.
5. Service & Staff
Hospitality at Consolación is a strong point, with staff receiving glowing reviews. Guests have highlighted the host as "extremely knowledgeable, helpful and friendly." Many describe the staff as "exceptional," "warm and welcoming," and "very nice." Personalized touches such as offering soup and juice upon arrival and a small homemade cake upon departure contribute to the positive guest experience.
A singular instance mentioned a "younger hostess" being perceived as "a bit rude" and rushing dinner service.
6. Location & Accessibility
Consolación is situated in a "beautiful and undiscovered" natural paradise in the Matarraña region, part of the Teruel province in Aragon, close to the borders of Castellón and Tarragona. It lies just outside the village of Monroyo, adjacent to a 16th-century hermitage.
- Seclusion: The remote location is a major appeal for those seeking tranquility and a chance to immerse themselves in nature.
- Activities: The area offers opportunities for walking, biking, kayaking, hunting for black truffles, or simply relaxing by the outdoor pool with pine forest views. Nearby attractions include picturesque villages like Morella and Albarracín, and an old train line converted into a bike route.
- Transport: The hotel offers free onsite parking. It is approximately 2 hours from Zaragoza Airport and 2 hours 45 minutes from Barcelona Airport.
7. Value & Pricing
Consolación is generally considered to offer "exceptional value for money." While it is a luxury hotel, guests find the rates affordable considering the quality and unique experience provided. We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this unique and beautiful property. The location itself is stunning, set beside a historic abbey and surrounded by peaceful natural scenery. The combination of the old stone church and the modern, thoughtfully designed cubicle-style rooms creates a very special and memorable atmosphere. Our room was modern, comfortable, and perfectly integrated into the lands...

Had a beautiful weekend in the Consolacíon hotel with my partner. The cube rooms have an amazing view. The Hotel provides everything you need to take care of your fireplace and the food at the restaurant is great. There are cute villages around like Valderrobres. Worth the trip to this isolated little spot!

Gorgeous location, stunning views. Great idea of rooms in individual cubes, but well past its glory. Would have perfect to have a fire going in the room as there is a fire place, but the wood was so wet it didn’t even started. The tiles in the shower and the bathtub are either dirty or water stained - so unpleasant that I have skipped washing altogether. You can see how lovely it might have been w...

Ask for Cube 3 if you can. It probably has the best view. Also eat at the restaurant at least once, it’s good.

Absolutely 100% the most beautiful location & hotel. It was a heaven. The only comment is that the cube room absolutely needs 'updating' as it's extremely 'worn and torn' and the floors could be cleaned much better. I think it's a fair comment that should be made but everything else from the service to the beauty to the delicious food and the little extras and focus on detail earns 5 stars and we ...
