COMO Le Montrachet: A Michelin One-Key Gem in the Heart of Burgundy

COMO Le Montrachet, nestled in the picturesque village of Puligny-Montrachet, Burgundy, has garnered a Michelin One-Key award in 2025, reflecting its standing as a truly exceptional hotel. Guests consistently praise its sophisticated charm, impeccable service, and prime location amidst the region's renowned vineyards. The hotel, an authentic 19th-century building, offers a warm atmosphere and a blend of historic elegance with contemporary comforts following a sensitive redesign by Paola Navone.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for COMO Le Montrachet is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "exceptional" and "superb." The hotel often receives high ratings for its location, staff, and cleanliness. The sentiment points to a luxurious and memorable experience, particularly for those seeking a tranquil escape in the heart of wine country.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several aspects that make COMO Le Montrachet stand out:

  • Service & Staff: The attentive, professional, and friendly nature of the staff is a recurring theme in reviews. Many guests laud the staff for going "above and beyond," even assisting in medical emergencies.
  • Location: Situated in the charming village of Puligny-Montrachet, the hotel offers an excellent base for exploring the Burgundy Wine region, with easy access to Grand Cru vineyards. Its position on a sleepy village square adds to its authentic and peaceful ambiance.
  • Dining Experience: The on-site restaurant is frequently described as "superb" and a highlight of the stay, offering quality gourmet and fine-dining cuisine.
  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's charming decoration, contemporary yet Burgundian interiors, and cozy atmosphere are frequently appreciated. The property seamlessly integrates with the village's historic aesthetic.
  • Amenities: Guests appreciate amenities such as free Wi-Fi, comfortable beds, and the option to rent electric bikes to explore the vineyards. A 25-meter heated outdoor pool, open from May to September, is also a welcome addition, with a spa in development for 2025.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at COMO Le Montrachet are designed to be restful, elegant, and comfortable, equipped with air conditioning, TV, and private bathrooms with showers. While modern and cozy, some guests have noted the decor can be plain or even spartan for the price range. Rooms feature comfortable beds, desks, minibars with some free snacks, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Signature COMO Shambhala bath products are provided in large bottles. Some larger suites include sofas, while only two rooms boast balconies, and the COMO Suite has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a veranda. However, some guests have found the closet space with curtain fronts less than ideal for a luxury property, and the sink area in bathrooms can be cramped with limited space for toiletries.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's restaurant is a major draw, offering a high-quality gourmet and fine-dining experience. Executive Chef Romain Versino crafts a modern interpretation of French cuisine using seasonal and local produce, with dishes like Charolais beef and Saône River pike-perch often featured. The restaurant boasts an extensive wine list, with sommeliers on hand to assist with pairings, reflecting the hotel's location in a premier wine region.

Breakfast is generally considered adequate, with a menu for cooked items and an artfully arranged spread of miniature pastries and other cold items. While the quality is reasonable, some guests have felt the cold selection could be more extensive compared to other luxury European hotels. The coffee, however, is exceptional, with lattes served for guests to customize. During warmer months, lunch can be enjoyed on a terrace overlooking the garden or the village square. There is also a small bar that serves snacks and light meals, popular post-dinner.

5. Service & Staff

The service at COMO Le Montrachet is consistently praised for being attentive, professional, warm, and friendly. Guests have highlighted the welcoming gestures upon arrival, such as champagne and refreshing towels. The staff's efficiency and willingness to assist, including providing packed breakfasts for early departures, contribute significantly to a positive guest experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

COMO Le Montrachet is ideally located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, a village renowned for its Montrachet vineyard and exquisite Burgundy wines. It serves as an excellent base for exploring the Côte d'Or region, with picturesque villages like Meursault, Volnay, Pommard, and Beaune (7.5 miles away) within easy driving distance. Dijon is approximately 40 minutes away by car, and the hotel is just 15 minutes off the A6 connecting Lyon and Paris. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi and free parking, with plenty of spots available around the village square. The area is also ideal for cycling, with the hotel offering rental electric bikes and guided e-bike tours.

7. Value & Pricing

Rates can vary significantly, with a reported rate of €600 for two including breakfast and a five-course dinner, while room-only options can be €70 less. Prices can range from approximately $287 to over $800 depending on the room type and time of year, with January often being the cheapest month and May the most expensive. Some guests have found the accommodation overpriced given the perceived lack of "extras" or specific design elements, suggesting it feels more like a €400-a-night room. However, many still consider it "great value" due to the overall experience, especially when the meal plan is included.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are largely positive, some recurring issues or criticisms include:

  • Room Decor and Storage: A few guests found the room decor to be somewhat plain or spartan for the price point, lacking the flair expected in a French luxury hotel. The presence of curtain-front closets instead of built-in ones was noted as less luxurious, and some rooms reportedly lacked sufficient storage space.
  • Bathroom Design: The sink area in some bathrooms was described as an "afterthought" with virtually no space for cosmetics. Some bathrooms also lacked shower doors.
  • Temperature Control: Issues with regulating room temperature, with some rooms being too warm, have been reported.
  • Breakfast Spread: While the quality is good, some guests felt the cold item selection at breakfast was sparse compared to other luxury European hotels.
  • Limited On-Site Wellness Facilities (Currently): As of early 2025, the hotel was still in the process of building a pool and awaiting approval for a spa, with no fitness center or extensive spa treatments available on-site, which might make it better suited for shorter stays for some guests. (Note: A 25-meter heated outdoor pool is now open from May to September.)
  • Construction Noise: One guest mentioned a "new but unfinished building" near their room with an "unfinished building [side derelict on top of garages] outside main hotel not far from very noisy café."

A wonderful place to stay. Tranquil. That's the summation of our whole experience. The rooms were fabulous. The setting outstanding. And the service above and beyond. High points would be the amazing wines and the tasting menu, of which the beef was superb. And then, because we were leaving so early, we left with a little breakfast bag of treats. We will come back.

Despite saying on their website that the restaurant and bar are open daily, it was closed Nov 23 and Nov 24 evening. This is unacceptable. The place is so far away from anywhere else so I cannot walk to get a drink, taxi is not available either. I will never come back.

We visited COMO last week for two nights on our honeymoon and it did not disappoint! Our room was spectacular, every design aspect was thought of except I would say the toilet roll holder needs to be stuck down as it wobbles a fair bit but that is a very small point. It is great to hear they are building a pool which would make this hotel perfect! The food was amazing, we had the half board packag...

We stayed at this hotel for three nights in late October. Although it was a standard room, our room was modern and had everything we needed. We had the tasting menu at their gastronomic restaurant each night, and every course lived up to this restaurant's reputation with regard to both presentation and taste.

Unbelievably bad service. Denied me a seat at the only restaurant in the hotel when I had booked the COMO suite. Never seen a 5 star hotel do something like this. Made me feel truly unwelcome.

Response from the owner

My brother and I stayed here in mid-June. The rooms are over the top and the dining is the very best. We arrived in the late morning on our bicycles in light rain. The staff was extremely gracious in helping us get the bikes stored (and in my case, charged). We had lunch and dinner the day of our arrival and breakfast here the following morning. Lunch and dinner were from the set meals (“menus”)...
