Expert Review: Château de Courcelles

Château de Courcelles, located in Courcelles-sur-Vesle, France, is a distinguished Relais & Châteaux property recognized with a Michelin Key in 2024, offering guests a luxurious and historic French country estate experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Château de Courcelles is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as an "outstanding experience". The property consistently receives high marks, with an overall "very good" rating of 8.4 out of 10 based on numerous reviews. While most feedback is glowing, a few criticisms regarding service speed and occasional maintenance issues have been noted.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enchanted by the Château's elegant grounds, exceptional service, and delightful culinary offerings.

  • Design & Ambiance: The château itself is described as gorgeous, well-maintained, and beautiful, exuding 17th-century charm with authentic details and a refined Louis XIV facade. The interiors blend historic decor with modern comforts.
  • Grounds & Amenities: The magnificent 25-hectare (60-acre) park, complete with a formal French-style garden, two-hundred-year-old plane trees, and a peaceful canal, is frequently praised as "wonderful" and a "haven of peace." An outdoor swimming pool is also a popular amenity.
  • Service Excellence: The staff consistently receives high acclaim for being "absolutely fantastic," professional, helpful, friendly, and very welcoming.

3. Room Quality

The 20 rooms and suites at Château de Courcelles are known for their unique character, elegant design, and comfort. Rooms within the château often feature high ceilings, period furnishings, and offer views of either the French garden or the picturesque village. Guests have highlighted generously proportioned and comfortable rooms, superb linens, beds, and pillows, and renovated bathrooms with excellent showers. Some spacious family-sized suites are also available in the former outbuildings, with some even offering private terraces. However, it's worth noting that room sizes and grandeur can vary. An older review did mention a room being "small, tired, dated and very cold," and another cited cleanliness issues such as a blood stain, hair, and mold in the bathroom, suggesting occasional inconsistencies in maintenance and housekeeping standards.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Château de Courcelles is a significant draw. The on-site restaurant, La Table de Courcelles, has been awarded a Michelin star for 2025 under Italian Chef Massimiliano Sena.

  • Cuisine: Guests rave about the "delicious food" and "excellent restaurant". Chef Sena's cuisine emphasizes local and seasonal ingredients, with a delicate and subtle nod to his Italian roots.
  • Wine List: The restaurant boasts a "terrific wine list" featuring over 700 wines, including more than 150 varieties of Champagne from local labels, with a focus on small producers.
  • Atmosphere: The dining rooms, including a glass-roofed winter garden, offer a pleasant view of the formal garden and canal.
  • Breakfast: A highly-rated continental breakfast is served.
  • Criticisms: While generally excellent, some guests have noted "very slow service" in the restaurant and a few have expressed disappointment, feeling the food, though good, did not always deliver the "amazement" expected from a Relais & Châteaux establishment.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Château de Courcelles is a consistent highlight, frequently described as "impeccable" and a key reason for return visits. Guests commend the staff for being professional, helpful, friendly, welcoming, attentive, and knowledgeable. Specific staff members, such as Mattieu and Nubin (from Nepal), have been individually praised for their expertise and helpfulness. The personalized service reinforces the feeling of the Château being more akin to a country house than a hotel.

6. Location & Accessibility

Château de Courcelles is ideally situated for a tranquil getaway in the heart of the Picardy region.

  • Setting: It is located just 650 feet from the center of Courcelles-sur-Vesle, offering a peaceful, verdant setting across its extensive parkland.
  • Proximity to Attractions: The château is approximately 30 minutes from Reims, making it convenient for exploring the Champagne region. It is also less than an hour's drive from Paris. The property is near a golf course.
  • Transport: While its serene location is a major draw, guests generally rely on private vehicles for transport. The hotel's website states it is about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Paris by car.

7. Value & Pricing

The value for money at Château de Courcelles receives a score of 7.6 out of 10 from guest reviews, indicating a generally positive perception, though some guests have found the pricing to be a bit high. As a luxury hotel, it falls into the '$$' price range according to Fodor's. Guests should be aware of a city tax of 1.65 EUR per person per night, which is not applicable to children under 18.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Restaurant Service Speed: Several reviews mention slow service in the restaurant, with one guest describing a 3-hour dinner experience with delays.
  • Inconsistent Room Quality/Maintenance: An older review pointed out a room that was "small, tired, dated and very cold." More recent feedback highlighted cleanliness issues in some rooms, including blood stains, hair on bedding, and mold in the bathroom, suggesting a need for improved housekeeping and maintenance in certain areas.
  • Lack of Elevator: The authentic 17th-century building does not have an elevator, which could be a concern for guests with mobility issues.
  • Dining Expectations: A few guests, while appreciating the quality of the food, felt that the dining experience, while good, did not always reach the "amazement" level they anticipated from a Relais & Châteaux property.

The setting of the hotel is undeniably beautiful. The surrounding landscape is charming and the park around the property is truly delightful. Unfortunately, the reality of the hotel does not live up to its appearance. The building and rooms are tired and outdated, the outdoor areas are poorly maintained, and the service is far from the level one expects from a Relais & Châteaux property. Upon arr...

Property is remote. There is nothing around it. On property, there is an outdoor pool and a so called Michelin restaurent. See my separate review for restaurent. Property is beautiful and unique and room was rustic and country. Safe was not opening and the engineer had to try 15-20 minutes to open it before we had to leave. Upon check in, the reception was cold and not very welcoming and slow and...

Service is rude and disorganised. Simple things are missed or not communicated. Food and service in the restaurant is sub par and it’s confusing how Michelin even awarded them a star. Only saving grace is the view. Otherwise spend your money elsewhere. P.S if you want to bike, bring your own. The hotel bikes are fit for purpose.

Absolute treasure! We came to the Chateau de Courcelles on a girls trip to celebrate our friend’s birthday. The chateau is about an hour outside of Paris and idyllically situated between Reims and Soissons (easy train access) on beautiful grounds which took our breath away.
