Expert Review: Casa da Companhia
Casa da Companhia, a Michelin Key Selected property in Porto, Portugal, consistently garners exceptional reviews, blending historic elegance with modern luxury and outstanding hospitality.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Casa da Companhia consistently receives "Exceptional" ratings, with many guests praising it as a highlight of their Porto stay. Reviewers frequently use terms like "beautiful hotel," "fabulous," "wonderful," and "perfect stay," indicating a very positive overall sentiment.
2. Key Highlights
Guests particularly love the hotel's prime location, the exemplary service from the staff, and the blend of historic architecture with contemporary design. The extensive spa facilities, including indoor and seasonal outdoor pools, sauna, and hammam, are also frequently highlighted as major advantages. The hotel's connection to an 18th-century building, once headquarters for a Port wine agricultural company, adds a unique historical charm.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at Casa da Companhia are described as "fantastic," "very comfortable," "spacious," and "super luxe". They feature elegant accommodations with air conditioning, private bathrooms (some with deep bathtubs), mini-bars, flat-screen TVs, coffee machines, electric kettles, and complimentary in-room WiFi. The design blends contemporary comfort with the building's 18th-century heritage, often featuring plush linens, mirrors, recessed lighting, and handsome black marble in the bathrooms. Some rooms offer balconies with views across the rooftops of Porto or towards the Cathedral. Double-insulated windows help mitigate street noise.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience, particularly breakfast, receives high praise. Guests describe the breakfast as "excellent," "delicious," and "fabulous," often noting a wide selection including buffet options and à la carte cooked egg dishes. The modern restaurant serves Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine, with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available. The ambiance of the restaurant is noted as quiet, beautifully decorated, and festive during holidays. The hotel also features a bar offering Porto-inspired cocktails and a selection of Portuguese wines.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff are consistently cited as exceptional and a major highlight of the stay. Guests commend the staff for being "incredibly friendly, warm, and truly go out of their way to help". Many report feeling genuinely cared for, noting personalized touches like staff remembering names and offering a welcome glass of port and cookies upon arrival. The front desk and reception team are particularly highlighted for their attentiveness, professionalism, and willingness to go the "extra mile".
6. Location & Accessibility
Casa da Companhia boasts a "perfect" and "fabulous" central location on Rua das Flores, one of Porto's most charming and stylish streets. This places guests within easy walking distance of major attractions such as Porto Cathedral, Ribeira Square, São Bento Train Station, Clérigos Tower, and the Douro River. While the location is ideal for walking, access by car can be challenging as Rua das Flores is primarily a pedestrian street, with vehicle access limited to special taxis with permits.
7. Value & Pricing
While specific price ranges vary by date and room type, Expedia shows nightly rates around $164 - $184, with total prices including taxes and fees ranging from $181 - $203. These figures suggest a premium pricing tier, but the consensus indicates that the luxurious accommodations, extensive amenities (spa, pools), exceptional service, and prime location justify the cost, making it a worthwhile experience for many guests.
8. Common Complaints
The most frequently mentioned complaint is the potential for street noise in rooms facing Rua das Flores, especially given the hotel's central and often busy location. However, double-insulated windows are in place to help mitigate this issue. Beyond this, recurring criticisms are notably rare, with overall guest feedback overwhelmingly positive.

Excellent hotel restaurant with full bar. We couldn’t get a last minute reservation for 6 anywhere else before 19:00. Finding someone upon arrival was challenging. The portions were large and the food delicious. They added sautéed shrimp to the linguine pomodoro and my mushroom risotto was excellent. The Polvo a Lagareiro was tender. They were willing to split plates. The wine menu is short a...

We received excellent service and exquisite food here. Since it was during peak dining hours, the wait time for the food was a bit long, but we didn’t mind much. After all, the restaurant's decor was beautiful, and the seating was very comfortable.

We were lucky enough to get a table here last night. We are a family of 5 with varying food tastes. The menu suited us all. I had 12 hour slow cooked lamb which was recommended to me by our wonderful and very friendly waiter Alberto Pinto. My husband and son had the peri-peri chicken which was perfectly cooked and my daughters both had Carbonara- one of the best I have ever eaten - including in ...

Loved the codfish so much, it was crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. It matched well with the mashed potatoes and the sauce. We also tried the Portuguese steak, the meat was soft and tender. The service is great and we love how we got to go to a separate space with less customers, it felt peaceful and you could hear each other well unlike in a lot of other restaurants.
