Expert Review: Carpe Diem Santorini

Carpe Diem Santorini: An Exclusive Adults-Only Retreat with Breathtaking Views

Carpe Diem Santorini stands out as a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently praised as a luxurious and private adults-only haven, particularly popular with honeymooners. Nestled in the tranquil village of Pyrgos, it offers an exceptional escape with panoramic views across the island, encompassing both sunrise and sunset.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment - Exceptional Luxury and Serenity

The general consensus for Carpe Diem Santorini is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "stunning," "beautiful," and a place of "unparalleled serenity, privacy, and refined luxury." The hotel garners high ratings for its staff, comfort, and cleanliness. While some minor criticisms exist regarding specific issues like air conditioning or pool temperature, these appear to be isolated incidents and do not detract significantly from the overall exceptional guest experience.

2. Key Highlights - Privacy, Design, Service, and Views

Guests consistently rave about several standout features:

  • Ultimate Privacy: With just ten suites, Carpe Diem ensures a low-key atmosphere, making it Santorini's most private property, ideal for couples seeking seclusion.
  • Stunning Design: The hotel boasts a clean-lined, minimal aesthetic with contemporary design, featuring cool whites and sexy curves, reflecting the Cycladic architecture. The owner, who is also the architect, has ensured thoughtful interiors.
  • Exceptional Service: The hospitality is frequently highlighted as incredible, with a reported 1-to-1 guest-staff ratio and 24-hour butler service, ensuring every guest's wish is granted.
  • Panoramic Views: Situated in Pyrgos, the highest point on the island, the suites offer breathtaking 270-degree views that capture both the sunrise and the iconic Santorini sunset.
  • Private Pools/Jetted Tubs: Every suite features either a private pool (some heated) or a jetted tub, adding to the luxurious and indulgent experience.
  • Althea Spa: An on-site spa, Althea, offers holistic wellness rituals and treatments inspired by nature, exclusively designed for couples.
  • Sustainability: Carpe Diem is noted as Santorini's first climate-positive hotel, running on 100% renewable energy and planting trees for direct bookings.

3. Room Quality - Spacious, Comfortable, and Thoughtfully Appointed

The suites at Carpe Diem Santorini are described as luxurious, spacious, and individually furnished, ranging from 85 to 120 sqm of indoor/outdoor area. They feature a minimalist décor in white and light grey colors, with comfortable beds, premium bedding, and laptop-friendly workspaces. Each suite includes air conditioning, a separate sitting area, an LCD TV, and a mini-bar. Many also boast soundproof windows and designer toiletries. Specific suites like the Lava Suite even offer unique amenities such as a temperature-controlled local wine selection and a record player with LPs.

4. Dining Experience - Delicious Local Cuisine with a View

The dining experience at Carpe Diem is highly regarded. Breakfast, often described as "ridiculously generous" and "amazing," is included and served à la carte with a different variety of delicious local cuisine daily, and can even be enjoyed on guests' private terraces. A signature "wine breakfast" is a particular highlight.

The hotel features Exaltis All-Day, a Mediterranean cuisine restaurant with ocean views, serving lunch and dinner. Exaltis focuses on contemporary Santorinian and Greek dishes made with local, fresh ingredients, and is exclusive to hotel guests for fine dining. The 270 Meze and Wine lounge/bar offers poolside drinks, snacks, and light meals with a focus on Greek flavors and local wines.

5. Service & Staff - Personalized and Attentive

The staff at Carpe Diem Santorini receives consistent praise for their exceptional hospitality, friendliness, and attentiveness. Guests report feeling welcomed and cared for, with many noting the staff's ability to anticipate and fulfill their wishes. The 1-to-1 guest-staff ratio and dedicated concierge and butler services contribute significantly to the personalized and effortless experience.

6. Location & Accessibility - Secluded Charm in Pyrgos

Carpe Diem is located in Pyrgos village, recognized as the most unspoiled traditional village in Santorini and the island's highest point. This elevated position provides unmatched panoramic views of the entire island, perfect for experiencing both sunrise and sunset. While offering a secluded and private feel, the hotel is still within walking distance (7-15 minutes) of the pedestrian heart of Pyrgos, with its charming atmosphere, restaurants, bars, and viewpoints.

In terms of accessibility:

  • The hotel is approximately 5 km from Santorini International Airport and 6 km from Athinios Port.
  • It's situated just off the main driving road connecting Pyrgos to Fira, the airport, and the ferry port, making it relatively easy to reach by car or taxi. A taxi from the airport costs about €25.
  • However, due to its hillside location and being designed over multiple floors connected by stairs, it may not be suitable for guests with walking difficulties or those requiring wheelchair access.
  • The shuttle transfer drop-off/pick-up point is approximately 600m from the hotel entrance.

7. Value & Pricing - A High-End Investment for Luxury

Carpe Diem Santorini is positioned as a luxury, high-end adults-only resort, and its pricing reflects this. While specific pricing fluctuates, room rates start around €552. Guests generally consider it a worthwhile investment for the unparalleled privacy, exclusive amenities (like private heated pools in every suite), breathtaking views, and exceptional service. Typical prices for a weekend night average around $363, with June potentially being a cheaper month and October being more expensive.

While the overall feedback is overwhelmingly positive, a few isolated complaints have been noted by some guests:

  • Issues with air conditioning and room cleanliness, including ants, have been mentioned in rare instances.
  • Some guests reported public and private pools being too cold or not adequately cleaned, with concerns about lizards.
  • A few reviews mentioned limited breakfast options, contrasting with the general praise for breakfast.
  • The hotel's location, while offering superb views and privacy, can be challenging to access for those with mobility issues due to its uphill position and reliance on stairs. The lack of nearby markets (a 12-minute walk in a not-easy area) was also noted.
  • One review suggested the property lacked "spirit" for its high price and low facilities, though this is an outlier compared to the majority of feedback.

Beautiful hotel with amazing views. The rooms are spotless and you really need to try the breakfast menu, we got everything to share everyday. The staff were very friendly and offered a great service. Cant fault my experience other than the hill, its steep.

This hotel has left me quite disappointed in some ways. Upon arrival we were not told where the gym or any other facilities were. When asked we were told we had to book the gym a day before atleast and so we did, however when we reached the gym the lady at reception said it was not ready and so we had to go back to the room to wait. When we did go inside their was only one treadmill and 2 pedal bi...

We came to Carpe Diem for our honeymoon. The views from the hotel are stunning and the rooms are very clean and tidy with the great addition of your own pool (if you choose to). The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the breakfast was lovely too. We had an amazing 2 weeks here. Highly recommended.

We stayed here for a 11 nights and had a lovely time. From arrival I thought wow what a place beautiful and everything on the pictures. We were greeted by Zoe who was lovely and sweet and we sat down and was offered a drink by Mary while we waited a short while for our room to be ready. Once we were aloud in our room first impression was just beautiful and very stylish. We were also upgraded from...

The hotel is really nice although drinks are expensive and there is hardly anyone there. Very quiet and peaceful. Rooms are great as is the plunge pool. Breakfast is nice. Biggest downside is location. prygos has some nice restaurants but is a good 15 minute uphill walk, and that’s after the really steep 100m walk up from the hotel to the road. I’d you don’t want to have a car (because you may wan...

5/5 for us! What can I say?!! This hotel was truly breathtaking, tranquil and the views were something you only dream of! We visited Carpe Diem for our honeymoon, we upgraded ourselves to the Master Suites with a heated pool (although, not sure if it was heated) however, we visited during a heatwave so the coolness of the pool was welcomed. Our room (203) had perfect sunrise & sunset views. We e...
