Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "exceptional," "romantic," and "outstanding." Review platforms often show high scores for location, cleanliness, comfort, and staff performance, with Kayak showing a 9.6/10 rating based on 200 reviews and Booking.com reflecting many "10 Exceptional" ratings. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud the hotel's breathtaking views of the Columbia River and the Astoria-Megler Bridge, which are available from every room's private balcony. The exceptional service and attentive staff are frequently highlighted as a major draw. The spa facilities, including a hot tub and authentic Finnish sauna, along with massage and facial treatments, are also a significant amenity, although recent changes to access have drawn some criticism. The hotel's design, which embraces Astoria's fishing and Scandinavian heritage with a bright exterior, exposed steel beams, and a Hall of History, also adds to its unique appeal. Complimentary amenities such as cruiser bikes and a chauffeur-driven 1959 Silver Cloud Rolls Royce for downtown excursions are also greatly appreciated.
Room Quality
Rooms at Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa are consistently described as spacious, clean, and comfortable, offering a luxurious retreat. Each room boasts a private balcony with panoramic river views and features elegant decor. Many rooms include a gas fireplace and a large bathroom with a clawfoot tub or jetted tub and a separate rainfall shower. Guests appreciate thoughtful touches such as plush bathrobes, bath salts, Pendleton blankets, pour-over coffee, and local tea selections.
Dining Experience
A complimentary American breakfast is a popular feature, often including hot and cold selections like made-to-order omelets, waffles, pastries, fruit, yogurt, and coffee. While generally well-received, a few guests have expressed that the breakfast, specifically the plates for waffles, could be improved or that vegan options were not readily available upon request. In the evenings, the hotel hosts an complimentary social hour with local wines, non-alcoholic options, and Josephson's lox, a local specialty. Bar 600, the hotel's cocktail lounge, offers craft cocktails, local wines, and a menu of simple yet tasty food options like flatbreads, charcuterie boards, and oyster shooters, providing a relaxing spot with sunset views. Freshly baked cookies are also offered in the lobby in the evenings.
Service & Staff
The staff at Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa receives widespread acclaim for being "awesome," "incredibly kind," "attentive," "helpful," and "accommodating." Guests frequently highlight their attention to detail and genuine hospitality, making special occasions like honeymoons and anniversaries feel truly celebrated. Front desk staff are noted for being well-informed about Astoria and eager to provide recommendations.
Location & Accessibility
The hotel's location is a significant highlight, literally sitting 600 feet over the Columbia River on piers, offering unparalleled views of ship traffic and the Astoria-Megler Bridge. It's conveniently located on the Riverwalk, making it accessible to downtown Astoria. The Astoria Riverfront Trolley is minutes away, and guests can also utilize the complimentary cruiser bikes or the hotel's vintage Rolls Royce service to explore the area. The hotel is situated away from the noise of sea lions, contributing to a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Nearby attractions include the Flavel House Museum, Liberty Theater, and Columbia River Maritime Museum. Portland International Airport is approximately 95 miles away.
Value & Pricing
Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects that. Room rates can range around $339 or higher on weekends. While some guests acknowledge it as expensive, many consider the unique experience, exceptional service, views, and included amenities (breakfast, wine reception, spa access, Rolls Royce service, bike rentals) to be worth the cost, especially for special occasions. The hotel has an average "Value for Price" rating of 3.5/5 on Kayak and 8.7/10 on Booking.com.
Common Complaints
While largely positive, some recurring criticisms include concerns about the value for price for certain guests. A notable point of contention revolves around recent changes to spa access, specifically requiring reservations for the hot tub and sauna, which some long-time guests found disappointing compared to previous walk-in access. Additionally, the spa is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A few reviews also mentioned limited parking availability and issues with slow-draining sinks in some rooms. Accommodating specific dietary requests like vegan breakfast options has also been a minor issue for some guests.
