1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus among guests is overwhelmingly positive, with many describing their stays as "wonderful," "amazing," and "fantastic". The hotel often evokes a feeling of being "spoilt rotten" and provides a "total sensory overload" in the best possible way. It is frequently recommended for romantic escapes and those seeking a truly special experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enamored with several aspects of Boringdon Hall:

  • Gaia Spa: The adults-only Gaia Spa is a major draw, praised for its exceptional treatments, an indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, various saunas (Finnish, Crystal Salt, Laconium herbal), steam rooms, and dedicated relaxation areas. The swim-through to the outdoor hot tub is a particular highlight.
  • Michelin-Starred Dining: The on-site Àclèaf restaurant, which holds a Michelin Star, is a significant highlight, offering a decadent and imaginative dining experience.
  • Historic Design & Ambiance: The hotel, a 16th-century manor house dating back to the Domesday Book, beautifully fuses its traditional Elizabethan architecture with modern luxury. Features like the Great Hall with its open fire and the "Secret Bar" (hidden behind a bookcase) add to its unique charm.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff consistently receive praise for being superb, friendly, helpful, attentive, and professional, often going "above and beyond" to ensure a memorable stay.

3. Room Quality

Boringdon Hall offers a diverse range of 42 rooms and suites, from "well-appointed and clean" Stable Rooms to more "decadent" and traditionally styled options in the main house. Many rooms feature luxurious touches such as four-poster beds, slipper baths, and modern wet-rooms. Some suites, like the Hypnos, boast a separate sitting room, modern fire, and a private terrace with a hot tub. The recently refurbished rooms are noted for their comfort, including very comfortable beds. Unique design elements, such as walls lined with living moss for noise dampening, have also been observed in some rooms.

4. Dining Experience

The dining at Boringdon Hall is a significant aspect of its appeal:

  • Àclèaf: The Michelin-starred Àclèaf restaurant offers a four-course tasting menu focused on showcasing British ingredients with artistic flair. Guests appreciate the culinary excellence, thoughtful wine pairings, and the attentive waiting team who provide informative details about the dishes.
  • Mayflower Brasserie: For a more casual dining experience, the Mayflower Brasserie is available.
  • Breakfast & Afternoon Tea: Breakfasts are consistently described as "excellent" and "amazing," with a full English breakfast being a popular choice. Afternoon tea is also highly regarded for its beautiful presentation. The Spatisserie in the spa also offers breakfast or brunch with views of Dartmoor.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Boringdon Hall is a recurrent theme of positive feedback. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "superb," "friendly," "helpful," "non-invasive," and "attentive". Many reviewers mention that the staff are professional and go "above and beyond" to make stays special, creating a relaxed vibe not always expected in a five-star Elizabethan hotel. Personal touches, such as handwritten notes and complimentary drinks, enhance the guest experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

Boringdon Hall is situated on the edge of the picturesque Dartmoor National Park and is only about five minutes from Plymouth. The location offers a tranquil, historic manor house setting with sweeping lawns and views of the rolling hills of Dartmoor. While offering a countryside retreat, it is close enough to Plymouth for exploring the city's attractions. However, guests should note that for exploring nearby attractions like Dartmoor or Plymouth city, a car is recommended as there is not much within easy walking distance. The hotel also provides accessible ground floor rooms and accessible spa areas.

7. Value & Pricing

Boringdon Hall is positioned as a luxury experience, and its pricing reflects this. While considered high, many guests feel it is "worth the cost" for the quality of the facilities, dining, and service provided. Rooms have been noted to start from approximately £140 per night, with midweek spa breaks from £395 for two (note: these prices might be from older reviews and could have changed). The Michelin-starred tasting menu at Àclèaf is around £120 per person, with an additional £80 for wine pairing. Spa treatments typically start from £120 for 60 minutes.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring minor criticisms have been noted:

  • Spa Water Temperature/Crowding: Some guests have mentioned that the main pool or hydrotherapy pool in the spa were not as warm as expected. There have also been occasional comments about the spa being crowded or a desire for more loungers.
  • Afternoon Tea Sandwiches: One review noted that afternoon tea sandwiches were cold, as if straight from the fridge.
  • Smaller Rooms: While generally well-appointed, some "Stable Rooms" have been described as small.
  • Mayflower Brasserie Pricing: While the food at the Mayflower Brasserie is good, some guests felt the prices for portions were a "touch ambitious".

Boringdon Hall is one of those places that feels special the moment you pull up. The building has real character — all that old stone, the tucked‑away corners, the slightly dramatic atmosphere — and the staff generally make you feel well looked after. The food is thoughtful and the spa is a proper treat if you’re in the mood to switch off for a few hours. If there’s a downside, it’s that the plac...

I booked Boringdon Hall Signature Spa Break for myself and my daughter. We had high expectations and they were well and truly met. Every member of staff offers fabulous customer service. We had a lovely last minute stay here for one night. Made full use of the impressive spa facilities. Stayed in one of their modern Well Ed’s rooms which was spacious and comfortable. Very good shower. V good mattress. Are in brasserie restaurant which we both enjoyed. Delicious breakfast after early morning spa.

Recently went for Twilight and Dine. The Spa experience was great and would gladly go back for this. The dine part of the visit was pretty terrible. We ordered 2 drinks, after 20 minutes, I had to remind the waitress that we were waiting on one of them. The starters were very good but mains, the Wagu burger was very disappointing. What seemed to be a frozen burger and fries from a supermarket, pla...
