The Altes Stahlwerk Business & Lifestyle Hotel in Neumünster, Germany, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receives high praise for its unique industrial-chic design, excellent dining, and friendly service. Housed within a thoroughly reinvented old steelworks, the hotel blends its manufacturing heritage with modern comforts to create a distinctive atmosphere.
Overall Rating & Sentiment

Key Highlights
Guests are particularly fond of the hotel's striking industrial design, which is consistently mentioned as a major draw. The spa, known as "Schmelztiegel," offers a softer use of the former industrial space, providing deep-tissue massages, body wraps, and facials. The two on-site restaurants, 1500°C and Gustav's, are celebrated for their culinary offerings, especially the breakfast. The staff's helpfulness and friendliness also stand out in guest feedback.
Room Quality
The hotel features 100 lifestyle rooms, characterized by their individuality, clarity, and elegant design, embracing an industrial charm. Rooms are equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows, blackout curtains, flat-screen TVs, and private bathrooms. Hypo-allergenic bedding is available upon request, as are wheelchair-accessible rooms. While many guests appreciate the comfortable beds and modern aesthetic, some have noted that the rooms, though beautiful, can sometimes lack practical storage options. Different room categories such as S, M, L, and XL Lifestyle rooms are available, ranging from 19m² to 34m².
Dining Experience
The Altes Stahlwerk offers two restaurants, 1500°C and Gustav's, which are praised for their creative fresh cuisine. A significant highlight for guests is the breakfast buffet, frequently described as "extremely varied and delicious," "leaving no wishes unfulfilled," and featuring "outstanding baked goods and fresh smoothies." Ingredients are often sourced from a local farm partnership, and some products are even available for sale in the hotel's farm shop. Restaurant 1500°C provides daily lunch and dinner buffets in a cozy ambiance.
Service & Staff
The hotel staff consistently receives high marks for their hospitality. Guests describe them as "very nice and helpful," "friendly and accommodating," and "super friendly and helpful." The hotel aims to impress guests with "unobtrusive service and heartfelt appreciation."
Location & Accessibility
The Altes Stahlwerk is located in Neumünster, a city known for its manufacturing history, approximately 65 kilometers south of Hamburg. The hotel's address is Rendsburger Str. 81. It offers convenient access to local attractions like the Tuch and Technik Museum and is a short distance from the "Holstenhallen" exhibition center, the city center, and the train station. While public transport stations are nearby, the hotel provides self-parking, though a fee is charged. Some guests have found alternative parking in nearby side streets.
Value & Pricing
Many guests consider the Altes Stahlwerk to offer good value, especially for a boutique hotel with such distinctive design and amenities. Direct bookings through the hotel's website can sometimes offer better rates, with prices starting from around €119.00 per night, including breakfast, compared to slightly higher rates on other booking platforms.
Common Complaints
While largely positive, some guests have expressed minor criticisms. A few reviews mentioned that the industrial design, while unique, could feel "cold" or "anonymous" to some, with the large dining area likened to a "canteen." Additionally, some found the rooms, despite their aesthetic appeal, to be less functional due to a lack of sufficient storage space. The fee for parking is also a recurring point of mention.

The hotel looks amazing, industrial but cosy and modern. Downstairs there are different board games you can play, books to read and you can even find soccer table. My room was really nice, clean, with good coffee. The food is really good, a lot of vege options and delicious desserts. We were a bit unfortunate because there was issue with hot water and we couldn't take a shower in the evening, but ...

When asking about picking up the keys for the booked seminar room, I got the same answer three times at reception: ‘We no longer have the keys. The last customer has not returned them.’ As the hotels customer, I w...
